Host a Climate Action Event

Public concern over global warming has galvanized communities around the world to take action. This global challenge is being met with local leadership and a commitment from a range of stakeholders to finding creative solutions at the local level.

You can host a climate action event any time. Use the resources below to help you plan. One upcoming opportunity is January 31, 2008 Focus the Nation, an educational initiative that includes teach-ins and symposia at colleges, universities, high schools, middle schools, places of worship, civic organizations and businesses nationwide.

On October 4, 2007, mayors and other local government leaders across the U.S. convened meetings in their communities to discuss the science and what is needed to solve global warming as part of the first annual National Conversation on Climate Action. Out of 70 events held across the nation, 15 were in Connecticut communities. To find out more, visit the National Conversation on Climate Action website.

Resources for CT Towns

Here are some resources that will help you plan an event to generate community conversation and action on climate change:

  • Plan a showing of CPTV's DVD "The Warming of Connecticut." A limited number of copies of the DVD are available for towns to borrow. Contact us to inquire about borrowing a copy of this DVD to show at an event or buy a copy of the DVD from CPTV.
  • Plan a presentation on climate change. Our speakers list provides info on many people in Connecticut who can do presentations on climate change. View the speakers list and contact the individuals directly to determine their availability and make arrangements.
  • Start a community discussion group to explore solutions to climate change and take action. "Low Carbon Diet: A 30 Day Program to Lose 5,000 Pounds" is a workbook containing step-by-step actions to address climate change. Contact us to inquire about borrowing a copies of this workbook or buy the workbook directly from the Empowerment Institute.
  • Distribute our fact sheet "What Can I Do About Climate Change?" The fact sheet lists climate change solutions and the programs, incentives, tax exemptions, and assistance available to Connecticut residents. Download the factsheet and make copies (double-sided please!).
  • Host a CT Clean Energy Option sign up fair. Contact SmartPower, 860-249-7040, or CT Clean Energy Fund, 860-563-0015, for assistance.
